 are at Essuk (Tadmăkkăt) in the Aday-n-Ifoyas, and at Saney, Gao (Găwgăw or Gaawo), and Bentiya (Kukiya), in the Niger valley. Some of the epigraphic evidence from Saney is published here for the first time. Textual evidence which may refer to Saney, and which is found in the Soŋoy (Songhay) kinglists, is also analysed here for the first time. This lecture discusses the clash between the modern historian's aims and the constructions brought forth by social memory. It argues for the pursuit of «warp-like» historical reconstructions wherever the «weft» of the past is irretrievable.
