Abstract

The history of the region of Jijel is quite ancient, and it is as ancient as that of the many civilizations that had settled in this area which is peculiar of possessing a high strategically maritime and economic importance which had stimulated the greed of foreign countries in that it had been subject to the Genoese Colonization 1260 A.D , the Spanish provocations and finally the French one . As the French settled in the city of Jijel in 1839 , the area played a crucial role in facing the settlement policy of the advert in an attempt to protect the dignity of the people and as a fight for the sake of patriotism , this popular resistance fed the spirit of fighting in the elders and the precursors of the Sufi orders, the area also knew a political momentum with the appearance of the National Movement whose goals all met in the point of defending identity and nationalism and opposing the imperialistic policy of the French colonialist in the Oulama and the Political activists of Jijel , and as the blessed Algerian Liberation Revolution broke out , Jijel and its outskirts had been strong centers for revolution and the armed fight thanks to the Geographical factor ( mountains and the ragged trails ) and it also knew a tremendous revolutionary structure at the administrative , political and military levels , which made it for real one of the areas that are claimed and proved in the fighting for freedom , and the value of the limitless sacrifices that its fighters had made in the sake of getting freedom back .
