Abstract

This research paper aims to measure the extent of the contribution of zakat to achieving economic growth, through a quantitative study of two countries, Algeria and Sudan, during the period from 2003 to 2018. The results of this study were summarized in the presence of a strong correlation between the zakat index and the economic growth index in the two countries, and it was also found that the total collection of zakat has an impact on the GDP. In Algeria, if the collection of zakat increases in the long term by 1%, the GDP will increase by approximately 0.67%, and ff zakat receipts increase by 1% in the short term, the GDP will increase by approximately 0.31%. Likewise, in Sudan, if the collection of zakat increases in the long run by 1%, the GDP will increase by approximately 1.02%, and if zakat receipts increase by 1% in the short term, GDP will increase by approximately 1%. The study revealed also that the contribution of zakat to economic growth in Sudan is greater than that of Algeria. This is due to the fact that the Sudanese experience in zakat is much older than the Algerian experience. And Zakat in Sudan is of a compulsory nature, while in Algeria it is voluntary.
