Abstract

Abstract:
We have sought, through this research paper, to provide an overview of ancient
anthropological thought, that is, those views and ideas that some philosophers, historians and
travelers contributed to in the field of human study from a natural, social and cultural point
of view, before the emergence of anthropology as a new science. In this context, we traced
the development of this thought, starting from the ancient times of the Greeks and Romans,
through the Middle Ages among the Europeans and the Muslim Arabs, and reaching the
Renaissance in the European continent, and we also tried to identify its most important
characteristics.
Finally, we come to the general conclusion that anthropology, which emerged in the late
nineteenth century as a new discipline of knowledge, was closely connected with intellectual
heritage that prevailed in eighteenth century in Europe, That is, in the age of enlightenment.
